What does a salvage title mean when buying a vehicle? A salvage title is a vehicle title denoting that the vehicle has been declared a total loss by an insurance company or the DMV. A car may be titled "salvage" by an insurance company because it was involved in an accident, vandalized or stolen. A vehicle is only titled "salvage" if the assigning agency has determined that repairing the vehicle will cost more than about 75 percent of its market value
