Using Automotive Alignment Tools in Your Garage

Posted by on 1/18/2013 to Info News
Normally, the front tires of your car are supposed to point exactly in the same direction and if they don't then there's something wrong. Alignment problems can cause uneven tire wear and shortened tire longevity. These effects are created when the wheels move at different angles, causing the car to pull to the left or right. Big name tire retail companies use state-of-the-art machines to check the caster and camber angles on their clients' vehicles, but you too can make the necessary adjustments with the help of a few automotive alignment tools in your garage.

After you establish that your car is aligned improperly, you'll need to locate the adjustment sleeves. The sleeves connect the outer tie-rod ends to the rest of the steering system and will need to be adjusted for each side of the vehicle equally. Unadjusted alignment is caused by driving tires into deep potholes and operating the vehicle on rough roads. An unaligned camber or caster can signal mechanical problems in the steering wheel and worn-out parts. If the problem is severe then it's best to leave it to a professional but if it's minor then you should be able to diagnose and fix your vehicle from the comfort of your garage with the use of a few automotive alignment tools.
