Understanding Tools

Posted by on 12/7/2012 to Info News
How many tools do you know how to properly use? With so many tools for all sorts of work, it is almost impossible to know how to properly use them - especially if you are without years of experience. Even the most experienced handyman will have some tools which he will not know how to use. There are some tools which look simple enough to use, like screwdrivers and pliers. Sure they can be used by anyone - however, to fully use the potential of these tools, you need some education and training to properly handle them.

For those who are not familiar with screwdrivers, Jay Greco has made a video which explains the difference between the two types. He explains that there are two kinds of screwdrivers - the straight screwdriver and Phillip's screwdriver. The straight screwdriver comes with a magnetized tip and one which is grounded. You need to choose which one to use depending on where it will be needed. Unless you like to be electrocuted, use the grounded one instead of one with a magnetic tip. The Phillip's screws are for jobs that need more torque.

Another tool that looks simple enough to use is the handsaw. Some people think that all that needs to be done to use it is to push and pull its blade against wood or metal. However, not everyone knows that there are different kinds of saws which have distinctive purposes. For example, a crosscut saw is best used for cutting across the grain of wood. If you want to cut parallel to the grain of the wood, you will need a ripsaw. You see - you can use any saw for cutting wood, even a saw for cutting metal. However, if you do not want to ruin your tools you must learn how each one should be properly used.
