Kent-Moore J-42385-500 4 6L Head / Main Thread Repair Kit

For General Motors. 4.0L 4.6L For the repair of damaged cylinder head and main bearing cap mounting holes in the 4.0L and 4.6L aluminum block . This is based on the Time Sert method of thread repair which differs from the popular heli-coil method. This is the GM Powertrain recommended thread repair procedure. Cylinder head thread is M11x1.5, Main cap thread is M10x1.5. See J-42385- 650 for a short instructional video on the TimeSert thread repair process. NOTICE: These tools may be stored in the J--42385-2000 kit which was essential in December of 1999. It includes tools to repair all other fastener holes on the 4.0/4.6L engines. Adding the 500 kit tools will create a complete engine thread repair kit! NOTICE: THE FOLLOWING ARTICLE CAN BE FOUND IN THE SPX DRIVING FORCE, ISSUE 2, VOL. 1. Stripped threads are a major inconvenience for service repair technicians. Usually they can be repaired by drilling out the damaged and installing a threaded insert. With the new aluminum block, stripped threads represent a new kind of service challenge. Threads in an aluminum component are different than those most technicians are familiar with. In cast-iron parts, the threads are cut into the drilled hole using a threading tap. The result is a thread with sharp peaks and roots. In aluminum, which is much softer, the threads are rolled. This results in a stronger thread, but it doesn't have the nicely machined look we're accustomed to. In fact, a perfectly good thread may look stripped to the untrained eye. In these instances, technicians need to look at the bolt closely. In a stripped thread condition, there will be aluminum trapped between the threads. Once this has been determined, what is the recommended way to make the repair on the hole? Studies have shown that thread repair products, commonly known as helicoils, may not be adequate for certain high strength applications. GM needed a high quality alternative to helicoil type thread repairs for aluminum block/head engines. In 1998, the J-42385 series of Thread Repair Kits were developed in cooperation with GM Powertrain as an improved and preferred method of thread repair. This series of kits gives technicians an advantage over other repair facilities to perform the highest quality repair possible. Technicians must have the ability to make high quality threaded hole repairs on major engine components to ensure customer satisfaction and to reduce warranty costs. This product was classified as Essential for GM dealers to achieve consistent repairs across vehicle lines. The J-42385 series kits contain tools and materials for re-threading holes in aluminum engine components. These kits are unique in that they contain inserts which are consumable parts. Dealers can recover the costs of these consumable parts as a repair order line item. This applies to both customer paid repairs and warranty claims. Since the kits were developed for specific engine applications, efforts were made to avoid duplication of tools within these kits, resulting in a cost savings. All items in these kits can be ordered individually from SPX Kent-Moore. To determine the part number for each item, refer to the tool layout label included in the repair kit. Insert replacements are sold as packages in quantities from 2 to 10 depending on insert applications.
